Just an observation. For a while now I have been puzzled by the diagnosis that Brian had Parkinson’s Disease. His symptoms, I believe, were, in fact, those of an illness called Essential Tremor.
With PD, there is a tremor present all the time in a person’s hand. With ET, it occurs only when the person begins to use their hand. There are other symptoms of PD that Brian never had, like slowness, and stiffness of gait, balance problems, and tiny handwriting. But the main difference was in the hand tremor symptom.
When Brian was seated, his hands rested on the arms of his armchair and did not move. The tremor occurred when he went to pick up a glass, and Roie had given him a special straw that was a funny ‘joke’ shape to use, to help him have a drink. At the time I just took their word for it that he had PD. But later I came across a book on the illness, and that was when I discovered that his symptoms just didn’t equate with the symptoms of PD.
He was on all these pills, including the PD drug, Dopamine, and it can’t have been good for him, and probably hastened his death. People are much more aware these days, and it pains me to think he was misdiagnosed.
Sometimes people want to have a ‘grand’ disease because it makes everybody feel better to think it is some really serious illness, rather than just something that makes your hands shake, which maybe seems trivial.

Thank you for your message, and your reassurance. After sending the email, I realised there was something going on a lot more than met the eye, that the subject had brought to mind.
It is amazing how we can suppress stuff, but it is all still there, and can suddenly come to the surface. So. Later I recognised the real deal was this. Children instinctively know what is actually going on.
But as a child, I knew I could never reveal what I knew. Brian used illness as a way of getting attention. He always had a cold, or a tummy upset. This meant no one was allowed to relax and just enjoy life, because ‘Daddy didn’t feel well’. It cast a pall over everything. The thing was, after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he never had a cold or a tummy upset again. He now had a permanent and cast-iron reason for why we all had to pay him attention, it being a form of control. He definitely had a tremor, but I never believed he had Parkinson’s, even before the book I came across at random backed up that belief. What triggered my email was looking up the matter on the Internet, just a recent spontaneous decision, which backed up what I had discovered before. I always felt he was invested in having an illness that served his purpose, just as the other ailments had done. The main example of what I mean was on the day of my graduation. I was at Exeter, so it was quite a drive down. After the graduation ceremony, we were going to have a special celebratory lunch. But guess what – ‘Daddy had a cold’! It became instead all about ‘poor Daddy’, who had nobly driven all that way when he wasn’t feeling well. Etc. What should have been my day instead became his. Much later on Margaret told me that he had wanted to go to university, but because of the war had not been able to do so. He therefore thoroughly resented my going, and had even tried to sabotage my getting in. (Another story!) So he sabotaged my big day instead. C..t! To be blunt!
All this coming to the surface makes me realise just how much anger I still feel at what happened when my mother remarried and getting forced out of my house and my family by the Maxwell-Mullers.
Maybe this account reveals a little about how Roie behaves, I don’t know. All I know is, Brian and Margaret’s marriage was pretty horrible, a lot of neurotic, passive-aggressive behaviour going on, extremely
controlling on Brian’s part, Margaret being the perfect wife on the surface, but underneath clearly not getting what she wanted or needed emotionally. He once told me he didn’t love her and was only there for the beer. Margaret told me much later on that, had she known what he was like, which in her view was neurotic, she would never have married him. I had to pretend to be happy about the whole situation at the time when instead it was like seeing a giant juggernaut approaching, and being unable to stop it.

She married James M Bradley in December 1968. They (Edward & Molli) had two children during their marriage, Ursula & Ethel (Ethel died in a house fire age 5 – heartbreakingly/obviously!). She had three sisters. PN – in September 1931 he (Edward Scott-Williams) married his second wife Molli Collingridge in Kensington, West London. Ursula ran a Craft Shop on the Island of Mull & had two children (Bradley’s – presumably). The two children – I believe, a girl & a boy, must be in their 40’s or 50’s ++? I think that they both still live on the Island of Mull, maybe, they have some children !?

David Scott-Williams was born in September 1934 in Newbury, Berkshire, the child of Rashleigh Henry Scott-Williams and Eileen Millicent Scott Williams, nee, Cornwall. He was married in September 1970 in Tonbridge, Kent. He died on July 20, 2013, in Tonbridge, Kent, at the age of 78. His eder sister – Ann Eileen Scott-Williams was born on August 27, 1930, her father, Rashleigh, was 33, and her mother, Eileen, was 35. She lived in Berkshire, England, in 1939. She had one brother David Scott-Williams.
Rashleigh Henry Williams was born on June 2, 1897, in Dorset, his father, Montague, was 38 and his mother, Audrey Mary, nee, Kindersley was 30. He married Eileen Millicent Cornwall Webber in 1927. They had two children during their marriage. He died in April 1990 in Kingsclere, Hampshire, at the age of 92.
