Wealthy old Etonians are leading the green brigade. “Have you noticed that Green is the first socio-political movement in which every single leader and spokesperson is filthy rich – they make the Conservative Party look like the Jarrow marchers. Even the suffragettes – a pretty posh posse – could count working-class women among their star turns. But look at the Greens – not one chav champion in the whole stuck-up setup that is chock-full of Etonians. The new generation of Private Frazers  –  ‘Doomed, doomed, we’re all doomed!’ – tend to be from hugely wealthy families, too, though their ancestors tend to be barons. It doesn’t take a psychiatrist to work out that what these silver-spoon scions may be experiencing is a good old-fashioned bout of class guilt to make them turn on the cut-throat carpet bagging that made their families’ fortunes. But whereas getting a dose of socialism would have led them to turn – quite rightly – on their own kind, the rich and powerful, the warped logic of ecology encourages them to turn on the poor and powerless. Hence the constant harping about how cheap food, cheap clothes and cheap travel are the enemies of the planet – so, presumably, prices should go up and the well-off won’t notice a difference while the poor should starve, go barefoot and stay at home. He took a bunch of kids from a school science class to the seaside to collect fossils, hoping to enthuse them about evolution and to persuade those who were afflicted by religion to “think again”. There’s the problem. How can you “think again”, when you haven’t done much thinking in the first place? Dawkins waved his hand at the cliffs, mentioning how many million years ago they’d have been under water, while one or two of the kids seemed to be wondering where Adam and Eve fitted into this story”.

British Humanist Association e-bulletin – ‘But things are slowly changing’
“The BHA is not party political, but this certainly doesn’t mean there is nothing doing in the run-up to a general election. The BHA has been working to represent the considered individual views of humanists across the UK, feeding into the formation of policy (whichever political direction it comes from) and commenting for the media. The popularAtheist BusandPlease Don’t Label Mecampaigns that we have run, as well as recent campaigns we have supported such asLibel Reformsurrounding the Simon Singh case, are rapidly vocalising and familiarising government and media to rational, secular, concerned voices. Whether meeting ministers orresponding to consultationsand encouraging members and affiliated local groups to do likewise; whetherissuing manifestosandorganising hustings; whether working with theAll Party Parliamentary Humanist Groupand havingHumanism discussed at length in parliament(a largelypositively receiveddiscussion at that), government is increasingly aware through our activities that there is a “constituency” of humanists out there and they must take note of us. These humanists are individuals. They don’t vote as a bloc. But there are many issues that they care passionately about. They care about evidence. They care about the freedoms and rights and equalities and all the points of principle that affect not only themselves but others. They want rational public policy based on the evidence and based on principles of justice. The Prime Minister welcomed our new Chief Executive into his new role earlier this year with a personally signed letter! Change is slow and rocky but themembership of the BHAis getting us there.” Secular MEPs discuss religion, sexuality and sexual abuse “The BHA has welcomed a discussion in the European Parliament about the issue of religion, sexuality and sexual abuse across Europe. Naomi Phillips, BHA Head of Public Affairs, attended the meeting of the European Parliament Platform for Secularism in Politics (EPPSP) in Brussels yesterday, where the issue of religion and violence against children was discussed in particular. The EPPSP, which is chaired by Sophie in ’t Veld MEP, brings together MEPs from across political parties and other organisations, and focuses on the separation of church and state. Naomi Phillips said, ‘Recent revelations of the scale of sexual abuse of and violence against children by those within religious institutions and those representing religion have shaken countries around the world. Speakers from across Europe at the meeting of the EPPSP all emphasised the urgent need to hold all those responsible to account for the horrific sexual, psychological and violent crimes committed.”

Growing Up
(Science and Politics)
“No other way of knowing is based on a set of rules explicitly designed to transcend the prior belief systems of mutually antagonistic tribes, nations, classes, and ethnic and religious communities in order to arrive at knowledge that is equally probable for any rational human mind. Those who doubt that science can do this must be made to show that some other tolerant and ecumenical alternative can do it better. Unless they can show how some other universalistic system of knowing leads to more acceptable criteria of truth, their attempt to subvert the universal credibility of science in the name of cultural relativism, however well-intentioned, is an intellectual crime against humanity. It is a crime against humanity because the real alternative to science is not anarchy, but ideology; not peaceful artists, philosophers, and anthropologists, but aggressive fanatics and messiahs eager to annihilate each other and the whole world if need be in order to prove their point.” Marvin Harris (1979a, 27-28)

“The Nobel Prize doesn’t always go to the most deserving?”

Irena Sendler – There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ‘ulterior motive’ … She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews, (being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids..) She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.. During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted. Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize … She was not selected. Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.”

British Humanist Association e-bulletin

3rd May 2010 Looking forward to new opportunities

It’s too much to hope that Lord Justice Laws’ judgment will quell the tide of new cases being brought to the courts of alleged discrimination against Christians. Laws’ judgment passionately asserted the need for secular neutrality at the heart of a healthy justice system, describing calls for special treatment for religious believers in law and in the workplace as irrational, let alone divisive, capricious and arbitrary”. His damning indictment makes clear that there is no room in a democratic and free society for permitting religious believers to be above the law, in order that they can behave as they choose, even when that behaviour unjustifiably infringes on the rights of others.

We were delighted by this judgment (see the BHA response) and it has set us the in right mood to look forward to all the new opportunities which will arise in the coming months for our campaigns work – on issues such as equalities, human rights, free speech, civil liberties and education. Whatever happens in the election this Thursday, we’ll be there taking action on the public affairs issues that affect non-religious people, with more involvement from our members and supporters than ever before.

There are several ways you can donate to our campaigns and public affairs work at

Judge says Lord Carey “mistaken”, as he dismisses application for Christian counsellor to appeal

The BHA has welcomed the decision of a judge to turn down the application to appeal against an earlier judgment which found that Gary McFarlane, a Christian relationship counsellor who lost his job after refusing to work with gay or lesbian couples, was not a victim of unlawful religious discrimination. The former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey intervened in the case, asking for special treatment of Christians in Court of Appeal hearings, however Lord Justice Laws criticised these remarks, making it clear that there can be no justification for different laws for religious believers. He stated: ‘The precepts of any one religion – any belief system – cannot, by force of their religious origins, sound any louder in the general law than the precepts of any other’ and said if they did, then we would be ‘on the way to a theocracy.’

Naomi Phillips, BHA Head of Public Affairs, said, ‘Lord Justice Laws’ decision shows Lord Carey’s statement for what it is – a desperate cry from those unrepresentative few who are trying to retain the kind of privileges for religion that have no place in our modern, liberal and democratic society. A clear message has been sent out, that there can be no “opt out” from the law  for those individuals, such as this counsellor, who do not wish to treat people equally on the basis of their religious beliefs.’

Humanists welcome Catholic calls against Pope’s visit being a state visit.

The BHA has welcomed a call in the Catholic press to cancel the official State visit of the Pope to the UK this September. The view of the leading Catholic newspaper argues that the Pope’s visit should be a private, pastoral visit and not a State visit, funded by the UK taxpayer. The visit has come under greater scrutiny since the second Leader’s Debate, when Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg all disagreed with the Vatican on a number of key issues.

Andrew Copson, BHA Chief Executive, commented, ‘We support those Catholics and others who are now calling for the Pope’s visit to not be a state visit. As a citizen of Europe and the leader of a religion with many UK adherents, the Pope is of course free to visit the UK. But the Holy See is a fake state, which uses its international influence for religious ends and to allow the Pope to visit us as a head of state is ludicrous. Whatever the nature of the Papal visit turns out to be, we and our partners will still use it as an opportunity to raise awareness of the Vatican’s global violations of human rights and human dignity.’

“Scientists have managed to push back the date for the earliest known presence of a magnetic field on Earth by about 250 million years.  Analysis of the 3.45-billion-year-old minerals indicates the strength the field was much weaker than today.”

“And there is life on Earth because of an accident (not – God). But it is a very special kind of accident (an asteroid collision; the many other scientific reasons; so on…; and, the maybe’s?). And for this accident to happen in this special way, there have to be 3 Conditions. And these are

1. Things have to make copies (this is called Replication)

2. They have to make small mistakes when they do this (this is called Mutation)

3. These mistakes have to be the same in their copies (this is called Heritability)

And these conditions are very rare, but they are possible, and they cause life. And it just happens. But it doesn’t have to end up with rhinoceroses and human beings and whales. It could end up with anything.” ‘The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time’ by Mark Haddon.

British Humanist Association e-bulletin 10th May 2010

Irish blasphemy law highlights increasing international threats to free speech

The British Humanist Association has commented on reportsthat an atheist is to walk the length of Ireland to protest against the Republic’s new blasphemy law, which came into force at the beginning of this year. BHA Head of Public Affairs, Naomi Phillips, said: ‘There are serious threats to free speech and civil liberty coming from within Europe, such as this new blasphemy law in the Republic of Ireland. This is a dangerous and disgraceful law which seeks to stifle freedom of expression and to protect religious beliefs from abuse or insult. Modern laws should always seek to protect real people and their rights, but not to protect their thoughts and beliefs from criticism.’ Internationally, threats to free speech come from a wide range of sources, from individuals and groups wishing to censor criticism particularly of religion, through to powerful nations seeking to outlaw and criminalise any perceived negative critique or portrayal of religion. The BHA believes that, internationally, the UK should be a leader in championing free speech issues.

Sense and Goodness

Promoting A Naturalistic Worldview.

People adopt different worldviews, primarily due to their upbringing. These worldviews contradict each other, thus they cannot all be true. The best method for testing if one’s worldview is correct is from the perspective of an outsider with a high level of skepticism. This is the Outsider Test for Beliefs (OTB), proposed first time by John W. Loftus in 2006 (see: Loftus, 2008; Loftus, 2010).

My First family, second marriage, bringing up my 18-year-old twins, boy, and girl. I am a third generation Humanist, who has some old handwritten information and notes; collected over many years. Someone may find the articles interesting, or helpful. They could bring back a little ‘reality’, after being ‘shocked’ and ‘brainwashed’, by some malicious group, or institution (REBT Therapy). People should know better, than to do this, to our very young, and the ‘obviously’ vulnerable! Go to easily accessible, non-superstitious knowledge that is not charlatanism! The blog has given me an incentive to order my thoughts, learn, and read up again, after a few non-thinking years of (very silly) imagination and passion. Why not, get your own key to a ‘door’, customise it to suit you, and it can be, all of your very own! Don’t believe, or be led by someone else’s; inherited, stupid, and a very likely (past, and not of today’s) ‘totally preposterous reality’s’.
