Evolution and stupidity. ‘The Genius of Charles Darwin’ Richard Dawkins. Channel 4 – TV. ‘Depth’ of Education, in the UK!
“Poor Richard Dawkins. He took a bunch of kids from a school science class to the seaside to collect fossils, hoping to enthuse them about evolution and to persuade those who were afflicted by religion to “think again”. There’s the problem. How can you “think again”, when you haven’t done much thinking in the first place? Dawkins waved his hand at the cliffs, mentioning how many million years ago they’d have been under water, while one or two of the kids seemed to be wondering where Adam and Eve fitted into this story”. http://theanswers42.blogspot.com/2008/08/evolution-and-stupidity.html

By Jack of Kent –
“For those wondering, if anyone working with children hears an allegation of abuse, it’s the law to report it immediately (at least here and in the US, I don’t know about other countries). … “Even if the Pope doesn’t end up in the dock, and even if the Vatican doesn’t cancel the visit, I am optimistic that we shall raise public consciousness to the point where the British government will find it very awkward indeed to go ahead with the Pope’s visit, let alone pay for it. …<http://jackofkent.blogspot.com/2010/04/shall-we-arrest-pope.html> Jack of Kent <http://jackofkent.blogspot.com/> The Pope is planning to visit the UK on a Papal visit later this year. The Pope’s opposition to women’s reproductive rights, gay equality, embryonic stem cell research and the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV has a huge effect on the human rights of millions of people across the globe. We want to make sure that the UK government understands our concerns, takes the opportunity to speak out against these practices and does not make the taxpayer cover the cost of the visit. “It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated with the German and Russian peoples looking the other way! (Don’t forget the gays, the Gypsies and the mentally deficient victims either). Now, more than ever, with Iraq , Iran , and others, claiming the Holocaust to be ‘a myth,’ it’s imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who would like to do it again.”

“The Nobel Prize doesn’t always go to the most deserving?”
Irena Sendler – There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ‘ulterior motive’ … She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews, (being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids..) She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.. During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted. Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize … She was not selected. Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.”

British Humanist Association e-bulletin
3rd May 2010 Looking forward to new opportunities
It’s too much to hope that Lord Justice Laws’ judgment will quell the tide of new cases being brought to the courts of alleged discrimination against Christians. Laws’ judgment passionately asserted the need for secular neutrality at the heart of a healthy justice system, describing calls for special treatment for religious believers in law and in the workplace as irrational, let alone “divisive, capricious and arbitrary”. His damning indictment makes clear that there is no room in a democratic and free society for permitting religious believers to be above the law, in order that they can behave as they choose, even when that behaviour unjustifiably infringes on the rights of others.
We were delighted by this judgment (see the BHA response) and it has set us the in right mood to look forward to all the new opportunities which will arise in the coming months for our campaigns work – on issues such as equalities, human rights, free speech, civil liberties and education. Whatever happens in the election this Thursday, we’ll be there taking action on the public affairs issues that affect non-religious people, with more involvement from our members and supporters than ever before.
There are several ways you can donate to our campaigns and public affairs work at www.humanism.org.uk/donate.
Judge says Lord Carey “mistaken”, as he dismisses application for Christian counsellor to appeal
The BHA has welcomed the decision of a judge to turn down the application to appeal against an earlier judgment which found that Gary McFarlane, a Christian relationship counsellor who lost his job after refusing to work with gay or lesbian couples, was not a victim of unlawful religious discrimination. The former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey intervened in the case, asking for special treatment of Christians in Court of Appeal hearings, however Lord Justice Laws criticised these remarks, making it clear that there can be no justification for different laws for religious believers. He stated: ‘The precepts of any one religion – any belief system – cannot, by force of their religious origins, sound any louder in the general law than the precepts of any other’ and said if they did, then we would be ‘on the way to a theocracy.’
Naomi Phillips, BHA Head of Public Affairs, said, ‘Lord Justice Laws’ decision shows Lord Carey’s statement for what it is – a desperate cry from those unrepresentative few who are trying to retain the kind of privileges for religion that have no place in our modern, liberal and democratic society. A clear message has been sent out, that there can be no “opt out” from the law for those individuals, such as this counsellor, who do not wish to treat people equally on the basis of their religious beliefs.’
Humanists welcome Catholic calls against Pope’s visit being a state visit.
The BHA has welcomed a call in the Catholic press to cancel the official State visit of the Pope to the UK this September. The view of the leading Catholic newspaper argues that the Pope’s visit should be a private, pastoral visit and not a State visit, funded by the UK taxpayer. The visit has come under greater scrutiny since the second Leader’s Debate, when Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg all disagreed with the Vatican on a number of key issues.
Andrew Copson, BHA Chief Executive, commented, ‘We support those Catholics and others who are now calling for the Pope’s visit to not be a state visit. As a citizen of Europe and the leader of a religion with many UK adherents, the Pope is of course free to visit the UK. But the Holy See is a fake state, which uses its international influence for religious ends and to allow the Pope to visit us as a head of state is ludicrous. Whatever the nature of the Papal visit turns out to be, we and our partners will still use it as an opportunity to raise awareness of the Vatican’s global violations of human rights and human dignity.’
“Scientists have managed to push back the date for the earliest known presence of a magnetic field on Earth by about 250 million years. Analysis of the 3.45-billion-year-old minerals indicates the strength the field was much weaker than today.” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8659019.stm
“And there is life on Earth because of an accident (not – God). But it is a very special kind of accident (an asteroid collision; the many other scientific reasons; so on…; and, the maybe’s?). And for this accident to happen in this special way, there have to be 3 Conditions. And these are
1. Things have to make copies (this is called Replication)
2. They have to make small mistakes when they do this (this is called Mutation)
3. These mistakes have to be the same in their copies (this is called Heritability)
And these conditions are very rare, but they are possible, and they cause life. And it just happens. But it doesn’t have to end up with rhinoceroses and human beings and whales. It could end up with anything.” ‘The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time’ by Mark Haddon.
British Humanist Association e-bulletin 10th May 2010
Irish blasphemy law highlights increasing international threats to free speech
The British Humanist Association has commented on reportsthat an atheist is to walk the length of Ireland to protest against the Republic’s new blasphemy law, which came into force at the beginning of this year. BHA Head of Public Affairs, Naomi Phillips, said: ‘There are serious threats to free speech and civil liberty coming from within Europe, such as this new blasphemy law in the Republic of Ireland. This is a dangerous and disgraceful law which seeks to stifle freedom of expression and to protect religious beliefs from abuse or insult. Modern laws should always seek to protect real people and their rights, but not to protect their thoughts and beliefs from criticism.’ Internationally, threats to free speech come from a wide range of sources, from individuals and groups wishing to censor criticism particularly of religion, through to powerful nations seeking to outlaw and criminalise any perceived negative critique or portrayal of religion. The BHA believes that, internationally, the UK should be a leader in championing free speech issues.

Promoting A Naturalistic Worldview.
People adopt different worldviews, primarily due to their upbringing. These worldviews contradict each other, thus they cannot all be true. The best method for testing if one’s worldview is correct is from the perspective of an outsider with a high level of skepticism. This is the Outsider Test for Beliefs (OTB), proposed first time by John W. Loftus in 2006 (see: Loftus, 2008; Loftus, 2010). http://naturalism7.blogspot.com/2010/05/outsider-test-for-beliefs-otb.html
