“Watering-down of protection for gay people ‘shames’ parliament…” BHA, E-MAIL.

The BHA has condemned votes on the House of Lords which removed the requirement for discrimination against gay people by religious organisations to be “proportionate”. The government’s definition of the roles that would be affected was also voted down, after strong lobbying by religious organisations including Church of England bishops within the House of Lords. BHA Chief Executive Andrew Copson commented, ‘Everyone else is required to treat gay people without discrimination. What the Christian churches fought for and won were special exemptions from that law so that they can treat lesbian and gay people unkindly, unfairly, and discriminate against them (A shameful example, of their so called, ‘loving God’ to all our children and vulnerable). The House of Lords has shamed itself by conspiring in this sort of immorality. We regret it and we hope that those fair-minded parliamentarians and those Christians who have campaigned against this exemption are given a fairer hearing in the future stages of the Bill and that this disgraceful injustice is reversed.’ Read more about our work on the Equality Bill.

The not so dodgy dossier

The BHA has been campaigning against faith schools for a long time, and yet those in favour of dividing children by religion continue to trot out the same ropey arguments for the status quo. What’s worse, all too often they are they are successful in persuading politicians that the whole question of religion in schools is too hot to handle.

(My note, more to the point, ‘can you trust the religionists, who may be at varying stages, or degrees, of Revelation; with the education of your child?’ As this is a personal blog, and with the experience of being a father to two 10 year old’s, the answer is a definite no – a no, no, in all respects.)  

That’s why we’ve been thrilled this week to see a digest of independent evidence that shows the consequences of faith schools for society. The document has been produced by Accord — the coalition for inclusive schools co-founded by the BHA — and brings together research by academics, think-tanks and the government.

So, when someone next suggests to you that the current system is popular with parents, you can tell them that 57% of people think that religious admissions undermine community cohesion, and even more want balanced RE which includes non-religious perspectives. And when they ask how a faith school could possibly get a wealthier intake than a neighbouring community schools, you will have the statistics showing that church school intakes definitely are disproportionately middle class. With some schools requiring regular attendance for several years to get a place, it’s little wonder that that some schools are off limits to all but the most religious or determined parents.

Beware – Everyone should feel a ‘little uneasy’ with their own religion or ideology – it is a very healthy to doubt, and if lucky enough to be allowed to: you certainly should! Everything changed after September 11th, except for the religiosity in most our schools, which they doggedly hang on to, as if in a dream, and in some of our institutions (House of Lords), it is, as if, September 11th never happened, with the denial of (home-grown) reasons that their promotion of religiosity (religious power – unelected Bishops of the House of Lords) might of been at some fault! The real horrors passed them by, as if they were in some senile (some of them are, and so very silly, with their outdated, embarrassing – antics and language) dream, unfortunately the ghastly horrors were very real to the people who jumped off the Towers to avoid the heat, so on…

“Six Conditions for Thought Reform”

    Keep the person unaware of what is going on and how she or he is being changed a step at a time. Potential new members are led, step by step, through a behavioural-change program without being aware of the final agenda or full content of the group.

    The goal may be to make them deployable agents for the leadership, to get them to buy more courses, or get them to make a deeper commitment, depending on the leader’s aim and desires.

     Control the person’s social and/or physical environment; especially control the person’s time. Through various methods, newer members are kept busy and led to think about the group and its content during as much of their waking time as possible.

    Systematically create a sense of powerlessness in the person. This is accomplished by getting members away from the normal social support group for a period of time and into an environment where the majority of people are already group members.

    The members serve as models of the attitudes and behaviours of the group and speak an in-group language. Manipulate a system of rewards, punishments and experiences in such a way as to inhibit behaviour that reflects the person’s former social identity.

    Manipulation of experiences can be accomplished through various methods of trance induction, including leaders using such techniques as paced speaking patterns, guided imagery, chanting, long prayer sessions or lectures, and lengthy meditation sessions.

    Manipulate a system of rewards, punishments, and experiences in order to promote learning the group’s ideology or belief system and group-approved behaviours. Good behaviour, demonstrating an understanding and acceptance of the group’s beliefs, and compliance are rewarded while questioning, expressing doubts or criticizing are met with disapproval, redress and possible rejection. If one expresses a question, he or she is made to feel that there is something inherently wrong with them to be questioning.

    Put forth a closed system of logic and an authoritarian structure that permits no feedback and refuses to be modified except by leadership approval or executive order. The group has a top-down, pyramid structure.  The leaders must have verbal ways of never losing. “When God’s word… is neglected, and when God’s law is ridiculed, despised, laughed at, the result can only be destruction and injustice.” Pope Benedict XV1.

Why fifty years of age?
 
You must have seen how youngsters, when they get their first taste of it, treat argument as a form of sport solely for the purpose of contradiction. When someone has proved them wrong, they copy his methods to confute others, delighting like puppies in tugging and tearing at anyone who comes near them. And so, after a long course of proving others wrong and being proved wrong themselves, they rush to the conclusion that all they once believed is false; and the result is that in the eyes of the world they discredit, not themselves only, but the whole business of philosophy. An older man will not share this craze for making sport of contradiction.
 
He will prefer to take for his model the conversation of one who is bent on seeking truth, and his own reasonableness will bring credit on the pursuit.

The Modern Matrix?
 
‘The Making of the Human Mind’ by Colin Renfrew and the 5 sequential stages of human development, “a very persuasive one”. The first three stages are ‘unilineal’ (where the idea of memes or memetics of Dawkins is found to be a bit loose in its terminology) as in the evolution to Homo sapiens from Homo erectus. Based on ‘Origins of the Modern Mind’ Merlin Donald 1991 and refined by Colin Renfrew and later accepted by Donald.
 
1) Episodic Stage – Primate cognition 2) Mimetic Stage – 4 million to 400,000years (peaking with Homo erectus) 3) Mythic Stage – first use of complex language – 500,000 years to the present (peaking with Homo sapiens) 4) Material Symbolic Stage. Leslie White recognised this as defining the ‘importance in human culture’  (icons of religious faith, amongst the many other symbols) 5) Theoretic Stage. Donald calls this ‘institutionalised paradigmatic thought’ (writing – ‘massive external memory storage’). A better and more detailed explanation can be found in Colin Renfrew’s  fascinating book ‘Prehistory’. Writing this to try and clarify it in my own mind, as it must be (and in my great ignorance), the ground breaking formation of a basis (and) origin for all leaning! – stunning!
