The Power : For Us : PersonallyWHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM A GLOBEThe earth and its peoples are mere pinpricks in space and time.Take space :In space there are millions of galaxies each made up of millions of stars (suns). In our galaxy there are thousands of millions of stars of which our sun is one, an average sort of star, in an average sort of galaxy. Think of the whole of North America and think of an apple, this is the correct relationship between our galaxy and the entire solar system (our little star and its nine planets). Planet Earth, is, but a pip in the apple.Take time :The universe (all the billions of galaxies) is about 15,000 million years old, our galaxy is about 10,000 million years old and planet earth is 4,500 million years old. The earth has been lifeless except for algae and bacteria, for most of its existence. There was no life on land, not even a plant, until the earth was 4,000 million years old, and no talking humans until 40,000 years ago. A split-second ago comparatively. For nearly nine tenths of this split-second, all humans lived in caves or mud huts. Only within the last one hundred years has Man known where he is and why he is. But, it takes hundreds of years for really important discoveries to sink into human consciousness and affect human behaviour. Even today, most people would rather believe, than know, and few people can explain to you the difference between a planet and a star, what makes a blade of grass grow or what happens when you strike a match. Try them!Look at this globe :If the sun was the size of this globe, the earth would be sixty feet away and as small as a pinhead. Some travel times – at the speed of light: 186,000 miles per second.
Sun : 8 minutes.
Nearest star : 4 years.
Nearest galaxy : 2 million years.NotesYou can see the nearest galaxy with the naked eye, but it would still take you 2 million years to get there travelling at the speed of light – (186,282.397 miles per second in a vacuum, source – Encarta) – if that were possible. Some Quasars (quasi-stellar radio sources) are 13 thousand million light-years away that is nearly at the edge of the universe. These distant quasars may be colliding galaxies. The Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest neighbouring galaxy, which is in fact approaching us, may collide with our galaxy at about the time the sun dies.WE ARE LIVING AT THE BEGINNING OF KNOWLEDGE AND NOT SURPRISINGLY, STILL FIGHTING OUR WAY THROUGH JUNGLES OF IGNORANCE, DOGMA, MYTH AND DANGEROUS SUPERSTITIONS. WE MAY BE NATURES UNIQUE EXPERIMENT, TO MAKE THE RATIONAL INTELLIGENCE PROVE ITSELF SOUNDER THAN THE REFLEX. KNOWLEDGE IS OUR DESTINY.
